State:
Cambodia
My Story:
Having spent most of the childhood in Hong Kong, I moved to Iowa, USA, to study at Grinnell College. A big change indeed. But the experience of living in the countryside and interacting with many international students prompted me to travel more. In the following years, I have been to Denmark for exchange (and of course travelling in Europe), India and China. Now, I am in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. I feel deeply for the lack of opportunities available for young people in developing countries and I hope to help them access more education, training and job opportunities.
My Religious Views:
Protestant
My Favorite Freedom:
Freedom of Speech
My Personal Motto:
If at first you don't succeed, try, try and try again.

Wonderful Faces, Easy Victims -- The Nature of Child Labour

In the summer of 2006, I left the village of Bhoodanatham with tears in my eyes, waving goodbye to the children there. For a week, I lived among the villagers as part of a research trip for a local start-up NGO. I was responsible for collecting information on education and therefore got the rare opportunity to interact with many children in the pre-school and the primary school. My most memorable moment was when I asked the fifth-graders, with my broken Tamil, what they would like to be in the f… Continue

Are You a Giver or a Taker?

The question of whether certain people are givers or takers in their society is a subject for debate. In general, givers are those physically able to work, who are more educated or more endowed with financial resources and natural talents. They can contribute to the society by providing technical expertise for income-generation and by paying taxes for social programmes. In some cases, such as in the United States, those with the ability to spend, especially on brand-name products, houses and car… Continue

Phoebe, Hello and welcome to the Five Freedoms Network! It's great to have you here -- how did you hear about us?!

Your question about education issues in developing countries is an important one! Several of our Network members are Peace Corps workers, and others are also working or visiting in developing countries. I hope you receive some responses to your discussion and connect with others who have the same commitment and passion you have!

You may want to check out the Public Achievement Group here on the Network. PA members work to address a wide range of issues, some of which align well with your concerns. If you click this link, you'll be at the PA Group page. If you decide to join, you'll find a link "+ Join Public Achievement" to the right of the "Public Achievement" name.

As you can see from the world map on our home page, we have a growing, eclectic community of individuals from across the globe -- from Brooklyn to Pakistan, from North Dakota to China. Thank you for taking the time to add your voice to that fascinating mix.

As you surf around the Network and its companion site, www.fivefreedoms.org, I urge you to share your voice throughout. Take our You Be The Judge First Amendment quiz (a new scenario every two weeks). Leave a comment on a fellow member's personal page and make a new contact. Upload a video to our gallery, or watch and react to one already there. Join (or start) a group or visit the Soapbox to contribute to (or start) a discussion. And invite others to join us.

In short, use your voice to co-create our online community :-)

You may also be interested in taking a look at our companion site - the Five Freedoms Project. The section on "What We Value" includes a variety of resources about the five freedoms of the First Amendment, our leadership framework, student voice, and impact factors.

Post a comment on my page anytime with questions or ideas. Thanks again!
