Peace Corps? Impressed! Spread that Hoosier hospitality around the world! I teach 8th grade U. S. History in Lafayette, Indiana. I love that the Five Freedoms Network exists!

Bogale needs to come hang out in DC. I've got some sweet chew toys. He would dig it.

Woof.

Hi Joel,
I heard from Sam about the work you are doing here in SA. I live in Cape Town right now, had a fulbright here in 2005 to make a documentary and came back to lecture at a university and do outreach around the country for the film, Testing Hope, as well as a bunch of other things. Hope you are enjoying Limpopo and the work that you are doing. Would love to hear more about it. And if you ever get a break and make it down to cape town, definitely let me know. I may be up in Limpopo if the university ever gets back to me and says they want me to come... it's all in africa time I guess.

DC is as you remember it. But the Obama buzz does bring a different flavor . . .

Hey -- check out Molly Blank's page here. She is a filmmaker in S Africa, doing very cool stuff in line with all that you value. You two should connect.

Keep those blog posts coming. I'm looking forward to the next installment . . .

Hi Joel -
I read that you are in the Peace Corp. I just wanted to let you know that one of my clubs, the Gay-Straight Alliance, sent $350.00 to the Medical Clinic in Bondo, Kenya to help with meds and education in an effort to help prevent the spread of HIV this year. Last year a different club I advised sent $1500.00 to Kabey Fo, Niger through the Educate Tomorrow Organization. If you are still there in the fall, let's talk about some fundraisers that my clubs can do to help out. Thanks so much! I admire those like you who help the world.

I hear that. By the way, you should use the blog function here to share your ongoing observations of SA. Start by posting that great initial entry, and then we'll see where it spreads.

Installment Two: Continuing What Mandela Started

18 July 2008

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MADIBA!

In my country we go to prison first and then become President!

Today is a day of great celebration in South Africa and around the world, a day which marks the 90th anniversary of the birth of Nelson Mandela, or Madiba, as he is endearingly called here in the Motherland. “If the world could have one father,” Peter Gabriel once said, “the man we could choose to be our father would be Nelson Mandela.”

Most are familiar with his story: a rural boy who… Continue

Installment One: Snakes, Professional Wrestling, Shosholoza, and a (Sort of) Rainbow Nation

PREFACE

The following is a humble attempt to amusingly portray both the normal and abnormal experiences I am having as a Peace Corps volunteer in South Africa. It is also a forum for sharing my reflections on what I am witnessing and learning, both as an interested observer of South African culture and as a partner with the people in the process of awareness and development. I hope to bring you along in my journey with sufficient light-heartedness and humor, but above all, reflection is my aim.… Continue
